Tips for Staying

Tips for Staying "Well" This Pride Season

Jun 7, 2021

Author: Morgan Fykes

LGBT pride is all about self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people as a regular smegular part of society.  For far too long people lived in fear and shame and secret for simply being who they are.  Instead we now celebrate the beautiful spectrum of people that exist in the world with an emphasis on the marginalized.  Pride events can range in size, theme or seriousness. It might be a parade, march, rally or festival.  They often occur during Pride month or to commemorates a turning point in that location's LGBT history events.  So here are a few tips to make sure that your pride is safe and fun!

  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate - I'm based in DC and it is already over 90 degrees here.   I took three showers in one day this weekend and sometimes just walking outside will leave you drenched.  You have to replace all those fluids you are losing, especially if you are indulging during Pride.  Getting heat sick or dehydrate is a quick way to ruin the day and all your plans so make sure you are keeping you water levels high.
  • Keep It Hands Free - I love a fanny pack or a backpack for pride - try and keep is small and tight otherwise that bag will start to feel heavier as the day goes on.  Trying to only bring the essentials like your water bottle, Chapstick, sunscreen, battery, change of clothes and any other essentials you require.
  • Throw a Back Up Outfit in the bag - You never know what might happen later in the night or where you might end up.  You might just want a fresh shirt or a whole change, up to you on what you want to carry.
  • Bring a friend - The Buddy System works and there is safety in numbers.  Do what you can to take care of others as well – be aware of what’s going on around you and check in with others about how they are doing.
  • Make Sure Your Cute is Comfortable - Wear sturdy shoes.  Wear breathable clothes (or no clothes, live your best life).  You want something you can spend the day in with no regrets.
  • Use Sun Protection - Put on your sunscreen and bust out the shades.  It's likely going to be a bright and sunny day so prepare to protect yourself and your skin.
  • Decorate to Celebrate - Bust out the arts and crafts and make your most beautiful sign.  Share your favorite pride expression.  Bust out your pride flair and let people know you are ready to celebrate liberation.
  • Bring Your Battery Pack - Nothing is worst the getting stuck at the end of Pride with no battery left, especially since your schedule is probably on there or you might need to call to get in.  Keep juiced up to avoid any problems.
  • Always trust your instincts. If you feel threatened or unsafe, remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible.  Keep your group together and make sure everyone is safe.
  • Celebrate Being Yourself - Remember what pride is about which is celebrating your true self.

Hopefully these tips help you have a fun, safe, joy filled pride!! Go to our IG and share which Pride events you are most excited for and take lots of pictures and tag us so we can see you being your fabulous self.
