Welcome to Wellness Weekly coming to you every Wednesday. This will be a weekly series, sort of like a Letter from the Editors that will rotate between Morgan, Lara and Luigi with the occasional guest. We’ll hold space on the Dirt to check-in on our Sixth Sense: the term we use to refer to our spirit, our intuition, our inner power. And because while we exist in the world alongside our other Five Senses, we’ll do a check-in of those, too.
Morgan's Note: This week we are sharing the mic with Dev Heyrana.
About Dev: Heyrana immigrated to the U.S. when she was nine years old. This experience has always been the driving factor for how she expresses herself on canvas. She is an artist who loves to challenge herself by mixing the beauty of minimalism with different mediums and textures.
In her newest series RISE, Heyrana has been experimenting with mixing her own acrylics with natural pigments. She created her own palette with soft neutral colors painted on wood panels. RISE is influenced by women who have crossed her path.
She is a painter and lives in the East Bay Area with her husband and two girls.
Hope you enjoy this glimpse into Dev's world.
I know this last year has been eye opening, challenging, and at times liberating. I would not change a moment of how I got this here, to this moment. I think every journey, no matter how hard, is part of my story.
Inspired By the 5 other Senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, and Touch.
Sight: Seeing things through my children’s eyes.
Sound/ Listening To: Aside from when my girls are laughing so hard, Most evenings my oldest daughter and husband play songs on their ukuleles while I play with my youngest.
Breathing In: Baked goods. I’m a terrible baker but that doesn’t stop me from trying. Honestly anything that comes with a box and instructors is great for me. The girls get in on the fun, eggs and flour might go everywhere and that’s okay.
My youngest, Rowan, is fearless with the egg cracking and Quinn is the one who really loves to mix everything.
It’s really the process and the scent of the fruits of our labor is like magic.
Taste/ Eating: I love a hearty salad. I usually grab one for lunch from Standard Fare or Cafe Reveille both in Berkeley, CA. Always so beautifully done, simple, and tasty. How they put it together is always thoughtful.
One thing that we started doing with no guilt is to get take-out, almost every single day. Our lives are pretty busy and preparing meals with no stress has been such a treat. We make it a point to support our local/small business spots.
Touch/ Practicing or Stone: I use my Jade Gua Sha tool every morning and night. I know it’s been making waves the last 5 years but Gua Sha has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I use to watch my grandma and mom do their nightly skin routine. Now that I am older and needing some time to reset after a long day, I make sure to carve out some time for myself.
I have these cat ears headband and soon as that’s on, my whole family knows. Mama is about to have a little Spa moment. My morning routine is shorter and at night it’s really a great way to transition from craziness of the day.
