Welcome to Wellness Weekly coming to you every Wednesday. This will be a weekly series, sort of like a Letter from the Editors that will rotate between Morgan, Lara and Luigi with the occasional guest. We’ll hold space on the Dirt to check-in on our Sixth Sense: the term we use to refer to our spirit, our intuition, our inner power. And because while we exist in the world alongside our other Five Senses, we’ll do a check-in of those, too.
In the spirit of Recharge, I am writing this to you from sunny California sitting at my girlfriend’s house, enjoying the change of scene and pace. When I bought the ticket to come to LA to spend a week here before heading to my college roommate’s wedding and then back home, I had no idea how timely this trip would be. These past few weeks have been a whirlwind of family dynamics, change on change on change, and some major (and much needed) healing.
During the pandemic, some old and buried traumas started bubbling back up and I could tell by the reaction of my people to some of the things that I was sharing and how I was feeling, that it was time to get back into therapy. I have always been a therapy believer and have been talking to someone on and off since I was about 8 years old. I am also a big believer in finding the right match to get the help that you need. My first find was not the right match and she did not listen to what I wanted and needed from a therapist. She lasted about 6 weeks before I said next, she tried to argue with me that therapy was a process that takes time which is very true but I met with another therapist before letting her go and felt more helped and motivated in one session than in the 6 weeks I had been working with therapist 1 so I know I made the right call. My new therapist has been a much needed guiding light, asking me tough questions that challenge and energize me. I look forward to our sessions and the insight that she offers. Working with her has really helped me to find peace in all of the change that is happening and allowing it to teach me instead of frustrate me.
It’s amazing to reflect on how much I have changed and grown and to be excited for all the dope things that are to come. My current mantra comes from a book I just finished (more below) and it is “I expand in abundance, success and love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same.” Thank you for witnessing my expansion, I hope it inspires you to recharge and expand as well.
Inspired By the 5 other Senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, and Touch
Sight: I just finished reading The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks. They say that lessons show up when you are ready for them and this one showed up right on time. My friend shared this book with me and I finished it in a day because it was so compelling, easy to read and right on time. The mantra, “I expand in abundance, success and love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same”, definitely resonated with me and I look forward to all the ways I will continue to expand and grow.
Sound: I’ve been listening to “I Am” by Yung Baby Tate and Flo Milli which I feel is best described as a rap affirmation song. It’s a fun little bop that just makes me smile each time I hear it. It’s fun music and I am a queen and a dream!!
Smell: I got back to the ocean yesterday with a trip to the beach and getting to bury my feet in the sand and smell the ocean air was much needed.
Taste: So I wish I had taken pictures of the Taco's but we were so hungry they didn't last long but I would HIGHLY recommend Leo's taco truck. We had some delicious tacos, quesadillas and some Asada fries that were out of this world. I shall return.
Touch: I have been listening more to my body and trying to give it what it needs. Sometimes that's a little more mat time, sometimes that's some self massage, other times it's some Theragun time. Getting in touch with your body is crucial!!
