Wellness Weekly: Morgan's Commitment to Recalibration

Welcome to Wellness Weekly coming to you every Wednesday.  This will be a weekly series, sort of like a Letter from the Editors that will rotate between Morgan, Lara and Luigi with the occasional guest.  We’ll hold space on the Dirt to check-in on our Sixth Sense: the term we use to refer to our spirit, our intuition, our inner power.  And because while we exist in the world alongside our other Five Senses, we’ll do a check-in of those, too.

I’ve been thinking a lot about our theme for the month and what honoring commitment looks like in my life.  What causes or activities am I dedicated to?  A question emerged during my meditation and I had to wonder if I am as dedicated to myself as I am to everyone around me.  I spent this week up in New York, spending some time with my mom and writing content during the day and putting my old server hat back on to a major event each night for 5 nights straight.  I’m definitely a people person so I love bartending and serving, especially fun people which most of my tables were.  It’s also been too long since I’ve hit my 15k steps a day goal but I would feel that familiar buzz each night towards the end of my shift.  They built the restaurant on a barge overlooking the East River and every night a different chef came and did dinner service so each night it was basically a different restaurant.  The only thing that stayed the same were the cocktails and the table numbers.  I am proud to say that we had a solid team, even the chefs took notice, mentioning that getting their staff ready can be a weeks long process.  We had one day of training and I stepped up to captain the team.  I committed to learning everyone’s names, being a helping hand whenever possible and leading by example.  I will never ask anyone to do anything I would not do myself.  In response, everyone learned my name and often accompanied it with glowing reviews of my energy, attitude and service.  

As I sit here writing this, still slightly swaying mentally from 5 days working on a floating restaurant, I pause to think, did I over commit?  My body is not very happy with me at the moment because everything kinda hurts, especially my feet and legs.  There were plenty of times that I could have said that’s not my job but I often instead say somebody’s got to do it.  So I do.  My commitment for this event was to ensure that everyone, patrons and staff, had a great experience.  With the exception of our last seating on our last day, which got rained out, I feel that I can say that I was successful.  I did fail though at my commitment to self a bit this week.  Sometimes I get so busy doing that I lose sight of my first commitment which is self care.  So my new commitment for the next few days is to focus on myself.  As soon as I am home, I am going to have a long soak, get a massage and sleep for like a whole day.  I am committing to resetting.  And I am forgiving myself for losing sight of myself for a little bit.  I am human and it just means it’s time to try again.  Balance often requires recalibration. 

Inspired By the 5 other Senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, and Touch

Sight:  I am totally obsessed now with 9 Perfect Strangers (thanks Smudge!!) and am like halfway through.  I’m not sure where it is going but I am hooked for the ride!! The acting is so good and it is such a current relevant topic that we don’t see being talked about as much so I am loving it so much!!

 

Sound: Lil Nas X’s new album is definitely in the rotation.  I seriously love that dude and watching him live his best, fullest, most authentic life is a pleasure.  He is having fun and the haters can’t stand it and he couldn’t care less!! He is the embodiment of making your haters your motivators.

Smell: New York City!! This place is a smellgasm at times with so many different scents coming at you at once.  Some good, some bad, some sad.  Currently reminiscing on the many different kitchen smells throughout the week.  

Taste:  Every night after service, we got to try the chef’s food and these were incredible chef’s from all around the country.  Oxtails and short ribs and lobster, oh my.  It was really an experience to get to try all the different foods and to see all the different ways they run their kitchens and work together.  Each one has their own style, flair and method.  

Touch Stone: I wore my citrine while I was working to attract all the tips and I think it worked out pretty well for me. I don’t know that I’m ready to put my server hat back on regularly but doing these pop ups are a great way to earn some extra money and keep the skills sharp.
